What a Pain in the Neck!
Neck pain, or cervicalgia is very common in men and women in the US. It affects 10-20% of adults, though it is more common in women. Neck pain is more likely to develop as people age and it is a common symptom of many different injuries and medical conditions. Neck pain can be axial (felt in the neck) or radicular (pain that shoots into shoulders and arms). It can also be classified as acute, where the pain lasts from days to 6 weeks or chronic, where it lasts longer than 3 months.
Sympoms of Neck Pain
The symptoms of neck pain include a persistent ache, stabbing, burning or shooting pain. The pain may also feel like a headache, stiff neck or stiffness in the shoulders or upper back. People with neck pain often can’t turn their head or have numbness or tingling in their shoulders or arms.
the causes
What Causes Neck Pain?
There are many different causes of neck pain. Age and wear and tear are major contributing factors. Degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis and spinal stenosis can also lead to neck pain. Stress, physical strain, poor posture, and weak core muscles can contribute to neck pain. Even looking at computer screens for long periods of time can cause pain. Neck pain might also be a sign of other more serious health conditions present like meningitis, rheumatoid arthritis or cancer. Be sure to seek medical attention if chronic neck pain does not subside.
Alternative Treatment Options
Acupuncture for Neck Pain
Acupuncture can be an effective way to relieve neck pain. When needles are inserted by a licensed acupuncturist, they increase circulation, reduce inflammation and release neurochemicals, which relieves pain and promotes relaxation. Additionally, the reduction in inflammation can help resolve numbness and tingling in the hands and fingers, which are innervated by the cervical spine.
